The importance of nature in our lives is second only to happy interaction with other people. The same energies that move in nature inform my design process for landscapes: color, season, nuance, history, light, change, growth, contrast, memory and climate. A well designed landscape should give you a sense of pride, belonging, delight; a place of relaxation and safety. I feel strongly that landscapes should speak to their larger setting and work easily to reduce the input of labor, water, chemicals and materials that are suddenly more precious on a shrinking planet.

I think everyone should have a favorite garden place, right now.

Cooking, Craftsman architecture, fragrant plants, Piazza del Campo, the patterns and rhythms of agriculture, bocce and white wine on a hot evening, ancient Valley Oaks and poetry.
